Dentures: A Great Solution for Patients Missing Most or All of Their Teeth

Missing teeth can take a serious toll on your self-confidence and your quality of life, making it a challenge to eat and speak. If you are struggling with tooth loss, you are not alone. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry estimates that over 35 million Americans are missing all of their teeth in either one or both jaws. Full or partial dentures can replace missing teeth and restore your ability to eat the food you need and love. Dr. Bryan Carlin and his staff offer custom dentures at our offices in Madison and Hendersonville, TN. We can also place and restore dental implants with implant-supported dentures.

Types of Dentures

It is important to understand the difference between traditional dentures and implant-supported restorations when choosing the best option for you. Traditional dentures are the most affordable solution. They rest on top of the gums and are held in place with suction or adhesion. Upper dentures feature a gum-colored acrylic base and artificial teeth (known as pontics), and they extend over the hard palate. Lower dentures are shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Dentures affixed to dental implants are strong and stable and will not shift out of place.

Full or partial dentures can replace missing teeth and restore your ability to eat the food you need and love.

Implant-supported dentures, in comparison, are attached to dental implants in your jawbone. Implants provide a connection between your prosthetics and your jaw, sending important signals that help prevent jawbone degeneration. They also help to keep your dentures in place so they never shift or slip. Many patients with missing teeth choose implant-supported restorations because they are widely recognized as the next best thing to natural teeth. Keep in mind that the treatment timeline for implant-supported restorations is about three to six months.

During your consultation, Dr. Carlin can review your medical history, personal preferences, budget, and lifestyle to determine which option is right for you.

Fabricating Traditional Dentures

If you decide to proceed, we can begin designing your dentures. Dr. Carlin takes great care to ensure your new dentures fit comfortably and look natural. Treatment from start to finish will typically take four appointments.

  • Initial Consultation: Dr. Carlin will assess your oral health and take impressions of your teeth. These will be sent to a local lab and used to craft your custom prosthetics.
  • Measurements: We will try on wax occlusal rims to establish the proper dimensions, height, and shape of your dentures.
  • Final Changes: Based on these measurements, we will send any necessary adjustments to the lab.
  • Delivery: Once your permanent prosthetics are complete, you can return to our office for placement.

To extend the lifespan of your dentures, we recommend high-quality acrylic or porcelain restorations. These materials are more durable and lifelike than soft denture material.

Converting or Repairing Dentures

While conventional dentures can improve your ability to eat or speak, implant-supported dentures also protect the strength and integrity of your jawbone. If your existing dentures are in good condition, Dr. Carlin can convert your prosthetics into implant-retained restorations. This is a more cost-effective alternative than fabricating an entirely new set of dentures. For your convenience, we can also repair and reline dentures in about two days.
